Care Information
Thrives in organically rich, slightly acidic, moist, well-drained soils, but highly adaptable. Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to establish an extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. For a tidy, neat appearance, prune annually to shape.Pruning time: winter.
Culture:
Hollies prefer moist, well-drained, moderately acidic soils in full or partial sun, and the meserveae hybrids can make dense and vigorous hedge or privacy screening plants. Mulch the shrubs to keep the ground beneath them damp and protect against winter burn, which often is caused by frozen soil not being able to absorb enough water to allow the plants to cope with sunny, windy conditions. You can prune your holly in winter and use the clippings as holiday decorations.
