Thuja plicata 'Excelsa', or Excelsa Arborvitae, are similar to Green Giant Arborvitae and are also part of the Western Arborvitae family. Excelsa Arborvitae are extremely cold-hardy and show excellent deer-resistance, both of which make them an excellent choice as screening plantings on Long Island. Excelsa Arborvitae are moderately fast-growers and can be planted and pruned as a hedge. They have a more upright shape than the Green Giant's pyramidal shape.
