Ilex x meserveae

Considered one of the hardiest hollies, Female Blue Hollies(Blue Maid, Blue Princess, Blue Girl) will need a ‘Blue Boy’ or ‘Prince’ to produce 1/3-inch diameter red berries in late autumn and winter. Growing to 8 feet tall and 6 feet wide in USDA zones 5-9, Meservae Hollies offer waxy and wavy blue-green, spiny-edged foliage with purple-blue stems, and also don tiny white flowers in late spring. Their garb may purple a bit during winter weather.

Culture: Hollies prefer moist, well-drained, moderately acidic soils in full or partial sun, and the meserveae hybrids can make dense and vigorous hedge or privacy screening plants. Mulch the shrubs to keep the ground beneath them damp and protect against winter burn, which often is caused by frozen soil not being able to absorb enough water to allow the plants to cope with sunny, windy conditions.  You can prune your holly in winter and use the clippings as holiday decorations.
